She did her best to be there for her daughter, and help out whenever she could. I love how well Olivia’s mom dealt with things. That it is okay to be a normal teenager and not perfect. Olivia had to learn that not everything is in her control. The whole plot of the story was cute and a life lesson learned. All the teenage drama plus a a little sister who makes fun of her made me laugh. She freaked out, wanted to stay home, demanded more treatment. ![]() She dealt with it with how a normal teenager with deal with it. I really liked how Olivia’s characters dealt with everything. Howse really did capture the voice of a young teenager. This is a cute, coming of age story about a girl who has to live with zits. Subject has not been addressed in this fashion before.” A strong debut novel that is both funny and moving. “A teenage actress finds her life turned upside down when she develops severe acne. ![]()

![]() It is textured and layered, subtle at times, and yet always powerful. Janet Morris’s Beyond Sanctuary is the first volume in a trilogy that includes Beyond the Veil and Beyond Wizardwall, and the events in this trilogy take place before The Sacred Band, the magnificent novel by Janet and her husband Chris, which I previously reviewed here for Black Gate.īeyond Sanctuary is a complex novel and truly literary heroic fantasy. Love, loyalty, honor - these are the ideals by which these characters live and die. They are not only mythic heroes, they are also everyday heroes real people, everyday people who face extraordinary odds and foes… The Sacred Band has the sharp edge of reality, the harshness, the bitterness and the danger of the real world. What also rings true with the Sacred Band is their military tradition, their ethos. ![]() ![]() While the characters are larger than life, they are also richly-drawn and written with great depth of insight and humanity. This novel spoke to me on a personal level because it’s a story of pure human drama and powerful emotions. The Sacred Band is much more than great Heroic Fantasy: it is classic literature, filled with sub-plots, a fine cast of well-drawn characters, insight and wisdom and recurring themes of honor, faith, brotherhood and love. ![]() Let me start off here with a quote from my Black Gate review of Janet and Chris Morris’s novel, The Sacred Band: ![]() ![]() ![]() He calls his sanctuary the Foundation and designs it to withstand a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare he predicts will last for 30,000 years. Instead, he gathers together the galaxy’s top scientists and scholars on a bleak outer planet and sets out to preserve the accumulated knowledge of humankind, and begin a new civilization based on art, science, and technology. Seldon does not have the ability to prevent the decline of humanity that he predicts. The book introduces Hari Seldon, a brilliant visionary and psychohistorian whose job is to use mathematics and probability to predict the future. Foundation is set in the future, when the world is barely remembered, and humans have colonized the galaxy. It helped to redefine the science fiction genre with its seamless interweaving of science fact with fiction. ![]() Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series is one of his earliest and best-known works, which he began when he was only twenty-one. Collectively they tell the early story of the Foundation, an institute founded by psychohistorian Hari Seldon to preserve the best of galactic civilization after the collapse of the Galactic Empire. Foundation is a cycle of five interrelated short stories, first published as a single book by Gnome Press in 1951. ![]() It is the first published in his Foundation Trilogy (later expanded into the Foundation series). Foundation is a science fiction novel by American writer Isaac Asimov. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() To discuss how “sight” within the Bacchae functions, what “sight’ means must first be defined. This paper seeks to explore the motif of “seeing” in the Bacchae, using analysis of the theatrical conventions evoked, the metanarrative established through the motif, and a close reading of the text. So why do we watch? And why does the play encourage us to question this? Motifs on sight and seeing reappear through the text, running like a great connecting line through the various tragic acts of violence and shame. It is a play of great horror and violence, unsettling even thousands of years removed from its cultural milieu. Why is he in Thebes? What is the story of his parentage? Why are we watching? And that is the chief question of the Bacchae. The frankness of these statements lets the undertone of each piece of information pulse with questions. The audience is being addressed by Dionysus. “Here: I am come to Thebes: I, Dionysus, son of Zeus and son of Cadmus’ daughter:” thus opens the Bacchae, with, perhaps, the clearest declaration within the play.1 In a text so wrapped up in deception, disguise, and willful misunderstanding, the upfrontness of these opening lines is striking. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Soon Marx, from extensive research, begins to outline the horrifying effect of the industrial revolution (for all its benefits) on the working man, woman and child, the blighting of their lives and slow, oh so slow, march of correcting Acts of Parliaments through the 19th century. But do not think that that this is a dry analysis of the nuts and bolts of economics. In doing so he looks at the basic processes involved in labour productivity and how it turns into excessive surplus value at the expense of the labourer himself. He starts by considering commodity, value and exchange. Marx, famously writing in the Reading Room of the British Museum, set out to draw on theories of labour, money and economics developed by many key figures in previous centuries and then present a vivid picture of the effect of (as he saw it) the vicious exploitation of labour and the power-play and greed of that class of unprincipled businessmen - the capitalists. Volume 1 appeared (in German) in 1867, and the two subsequent volumes appeared at later dates after the author's death - completed from extensive notes left by Marx himself. It can be said of very few books that the world was changed as a result of its publication - but this is certainly the case of Capital: A Critique of Political Economy by Karl Marx (1818-1883). ![]() ![]() ![]() Valkyrie is played by Tessa Thompson in Thor: Ragnarok.
